‘We had all been looking

- By Myles Peterson

St Augustine’s College failed to let the latest COVID-19 lockdown dampen its junior students’ enthusiasm for the traditional Book Week dress-up.

Teacher and librarian Trish Baker said the event was successfully staged remotely last week, with students revealing some of the best costumes to date.

“The students at St Augustine’s love celebrating Children’s Book Week and had been preparing their book character costumes for Book Week since before the last school holidays. We had all been looking forward to a day of fun and laughs,” Ms Baker said.

Plans were already afoot to modify the event, according to Ms Baker.

“COVID regulations meant we couldn’t do a book character parade with all of our students together. Instead, we had planned to do a photo booth with an Alice in Wonderland ‘down the rabbit hole’ and Mad Hatter’s tea party as our backdrop. The photos would then be combined into a video to share with families,” she said.

But the latest outbreak saw even those plans derailed and the entire project had to be re-imagined.

“Then at the last minute we found out that students would not be at school. Knowing staff and students didn’t want to miss out on dressing up, we realised that we could still do our dress-up day by having students dress up at home and send in their photos,” Ms Baker said.

“The photo of our backdrop was used as our invitation to send in pictures and as the lead-in for our video. The response was terrific, and the students looked like they had plenty of fun. Around 90 students sent in photos, with even more students dressed up for their morning Zoom sessions with class teachers.

“The students did a wonderful job, and the video has been a big hit!”
