Restrictions force festival cancellation

- By Isabelle Harris

The Lockington Country Music Festival for 2021 has been cancelled due to uncertainty around future COVID-19 restrictions.

Big River Entertainment co-ordinator and event organiser Roz Giles said the decision to cancel the iconic event was made reluctantly.

“We had to make the decision. It's really, really disappointing,” she said.

Significant amounts of time and money have already been invested into the event including arranging performers, fine-tuning logistics, and sorting out coronavirus precautions.

Mrs Giles said the cancellation would also affect those who “just need to get out and get a bit of entertainment”.

“Country music folks are terrific," she said.

"They get a kick out of putting money into the town so now the town’s going to lose a lot of money.”

The event normally brings many attendees to Lockington for the Friday to Sunday celebration of country music, which involves many accomplished Victorian and Australian country music performers.

It also gives the town a much needed economic boost from the visitors who descend on the town for the days surrounding the festival.

Despite the cancellation, Mrs Giles has high hopes for next year’s festival, which she said would be “bigger than it has been before”.

She hopes to bring back many of this year’s performers and run the event for extended hours on the Friday, as well as bringing in an unnamed “special surprise”.

Next year’s event is planned to run from October 21 to 23 at Lockington Community Centre.
