Hopes for KDL finals fading

- By Gus Underwood

The fate of a planned Kyabram and District Football Netball League finals series was likely to be decided on Tuesday night.

League president Fraser Kerrins said that would be when input from clubs would be assessed at a meeting of league officials, but he believed a finals series had only a remote chance of happening.

"We’ll get the feedback from the clubs so ultimately they will make the decision, but personally I think it won’t happen. There are too many unknowns, and restrictions are not likely to be lifted this week," Kerrins said.

If the finals could proceed, only the top four sides would play under the old final four system.

This would mean first plays second in the second semi-final, and third plays fourth in the first semi-final. The winner of the second semi would proceed straight to the grand final and the loser of the second semi and the winner of the first semi-final would then play off in the preliminary final for a berth in the grand final.

If the season is cancelled, Kerrins said league awards would still stand.

"They have already been decided and will be announced at a livestream ceremony on Friday, October 1," he said.

"Hopefully clubs may be able to hold their own functions and witness the vote counts."

Holding out hope

The only league hanging on in hope of a finals series is the Heathcote league which will still stage a grand final on September 18 if possible.

It would be decided between the two top sides, the unbeaten Lockingtonbamawm and Colbinabbin.

But D-day for the league is tomorrow and if there are no changes to COVID-19 restrictions the season will be cancelled.
