Schoolboys win district flag
The Kyabram Higher Elementary School football team won the District Schools premiership in 1953.
The members of the team in the photograph are as follows:
Back row: Noel Mcaullife, Dick Isaac, Barry Ruler, Michael Cussen, Ian Lennie, Barry Allen, Bruce Shepherd, Barry Bail.
Centre: Max Mclay, Michael Mccarthy, Lionel Walker, Frank Parker, Les Sinnott, Ian Holcombe, Ray Doolan.
Front row: Kevin Mcdonell, George Mcqueen, Vern Farthing, Mr Peter Alexander (headmaster and coach), Ken Archer, Graham Lee, Les Whyte, Ted Winter.
A number of these young players were also playing for the Kyabram Boys’ Club team in the Kyabram District Football Association competition including Les Whyte and Barry Allen.
Les and Barry were both selected to play for the Victorian Schoolboys football team in the All-australian Primary State Schools Football Carnival in Brisbane in 1953. Bob Skilton (well-known South Melbourne player) also played in this team. It was reported that sound coaching and superb teamwork won the championship title for the Victorian team. All boys played above themselves, particularly against Western Australia — the 1952 winners of the title.
Both young boys earned distinction for themselves and for Kyabram.
In August 1953 the Kyabram Higher Elementary School hosted football and basketball (now netball) teams from Melbourne. This was the first occasion that a visit of Melbourne students to Kyabram had been arranged. The players were billeted out to local families.
