Davies to take the reins with Wombats in 2022

- By Aydin Payne

Lancaster Football Netball Club will have a solo coach at the helm of the senior football side next year.

Tom Davies was handed the keys to the Wombats' senior outfit last week following the decision by Corey Carver to step down from the role.

Carver enjoyed a successful four-year stint at the helm of the Wombats, which included their incredible finals run in 2019.

Davies, who co-coached alongside Carver in 2021 after spending time as an assistant, will take the reins of an ultra-talented playing list.

The Wombats clinched the Kyabram District League minor premiership for their undefeated 11-win campaign, while the reserves outfit secured top spot.

Davies — a former NT Thunder talent — said he was thrilled to coach his home club and he thanked Carver for his mentoring role.

"I'm excited to take over and build on from what Corey has done," Davies said.

"I saw coaching as a natural progression and I have always had a dream to coach Lanky.

"He (Carver) has been a real mentor for me. He has taught me some really crucial things like how to bring a group together and he's taught me how to communicate better as well. "I have to thank him for everything." Wombats president Rod O'neil said the club was pleased to have Davies locked in for the 2022 campaign.

He also praised Carver's work.

"Tom has been around the club for a while now, he has plenty of footy experience and we saw him as the perfect fit going forward," O'neil said.

"The list is in a really strong position and we have got some exciting times ahead.

"Corey has done an unbelievable job for us in his four years as coach. He has got us into this position.

"He decided to step down and we thank him for everything he has done."

Davies said he already had his eyes on next year's prize. The playing coach expects the majority of the squad to stick around.

"We will look to retain everyone and add what we need to the group,” Davies said.

“But retaining players is not just seniors it's also the ... younger guys coming through who have got bright futures ahead of them."
