Ewing re-signs with Tonny

- By Josh Huntly

Northern Territory forward Darren Ewing lit up the Murray Football League this season, booting 38 goals in six games.

Tongala Football Club confirmed the star goal-kicker would be lining up in blue again in 2022, meaning supporters might just find out what the star spearhead can achieve with more games under his belt.

The 33-year-old’s eye-catching six-game blitz included an 11-goal haul against Barooga, and bags of seven against reigning premier Nathalia and Mulwala.

Ewing sat comfortably in the top five goal-kickers by season’s end; leader Daniel Campbell of Congupna (43) was just five ahead.

COVID-19 travel restrictions in and out of Victoria throughout 2021 eventually curtailed the Darwinbased Ewing’s season.

Coach Jordan Souter said the NTFL stalwart often surprised opposition players with his turn of foot and was pleased to see him recommit for Tongala’s next premiership tilt.

“When you look at him, you think he wouldn’t be very quick,” he said.

"He’s very quick over a short distance, and a bit elusive down forward.

“He’ll be right up there in the goal-kicking (next year), there’s no doubt about that.

“He’s a good footballer but an even better bloke, and he’s unreal for our footy club.”

Tongala will also see highly touted 16-year-old Bendigo Pioneers midfielder Harley Reid return in 2022 when not on NAB League duties.

Reid made his Pios debut in July as a bottom-age player, and played two games with the Blues this season, earning plaudits for his contested ball skills.

Reliable backline influence Alex Williams is also back in blue, playing nearly every game in the notoriously stingy Tongala defence.

Girgarre has also bolstered its playing stocks for next season.

The Roos, who are fresh off signing former AFL player Damian Cupido as playing coach, have welcomed Rex Taylor and Wade Austin to the fold.

Taylor, a former Bendigo Bomber in the VFL, is a best-andfairest and premiership winner at Rumbalara.

Austin joins the Roos after recent stints at Rumbalara and Mathoura.
