Merrigum Golf Club

-

Saturday’s Privilege Cup stroke round at Merrigum was the final opportunity for golfers to qualify for the next Tiger Cup play-off to be held towards the end of March. The Tiger Cup was instigated by former president the late Kevin Pratt, as a contest between the winners of the Privilege Cup from the previous 12 months. Clint Prygoda booked that last spot in emphatic fashion with a sensational round of 79-14-65 to win A grade. We all know when Clint gets his game together he is capable of anything, and he has demonstrated this over the past few weeks of pennant and again on Saturday. He can out-hit anyone at the club by a long way; however, direction is often his issue. Clint will certainly give his fellow combatants in the Tiger Cup something to think about but may well have a shot or two less to play with as he is now right on the cusp of a 12 handicap at his home course. Clint’s pennant partner for the final last week, Greg Hall, was the B grade winner, but he was some 11 shots off the pace of Clint with a round of 94-18-76. Ball competition winners were Andrew Wood with 69, Simon Doherty 71 and James Campbell 75 on a countback from Ash Sanders and Bill Bray. James went home cashed up after winning nearest the pins on the ninth and jackpot 12th as well as the chook shed challenge with 11 points. No other nearest the pins went off.

The penultimate round of this season’s twilight competition was played last Thursday evening. Ash Sanders hasn’t played too many twilight rounds this season but came up trumps this week with a round of 41-4.5-36.5 for the 10 holes. Another playing his first twilight round for the season, Mal Campbell, secured the runner-up spot with 47-9.5-37.5. Those two made sure that the final round will be close and interesting by taking the top points. By the scribe’s calculations Simon Doherty holds a one-point lead going into the final round over brother Craig and Andrew Wood; however, that is subject to confirmation. Ash Sanders won the only nearest the pin to go off on the 14th, while Andrew Wood won least putts with 13. The two-point cut was 40. Good luck to all those still in contention, it promises to be an interesting evening on Thursday.

This Saturday’s event is par.
