The second round of the club championships was played at Merrigum on Saturday.
Conditions were tougher than they had been for the first week, with the weather being windy and much cooler.
Simon Doherty handled the conditions better than everyone else, winning A-grade with a round of 80-13-67. That is just one shot behind the best scores in the championships so far. Simon’s challenge will be to back that up in the next two rounds after a less than spectacular first round.
As a former club champion, he will know what is required and accept that as a challenge to be overcome. Tommy Ladhams was the B-grade winner with a score of 89-20-69. Like Simon, Tommy will be looking to drop his first round score as part of the best three rounds out of four counting towards the final score.
James Campbell is best placed to take his second club championship after rounds of 79 and 81. To challenge him, other contenders have no room to move as they will likely have to drop one of the rounds already played to have a chance. The ladies also played the second round of their championships and again it was Tash Doherty to the fore with a round of 87-16-71. Tash is now at short odds to win the ladies club champion title, however the handicap section will be an interesting contest between Rhonda Eberle and Ina Hogeboom after Ronnie scored 75 net on Saturday.
Nearest-the-pins were won by John Fuller on the two longest par threes, the sixth and 14th, Simon Doherty with his fourthlast shot of the day on the ninth, and Bruce Brown on the jackpot 12th. The chook shed challenge jackpots to this week.
This Saturday is the third round of the club championships, another stroke round.
The following week the championships will have a break when the Fitzsimmons Memorial three-person ambrose will be played, so get your teams organised for what is always a great day.
