JURY COMMENT
All too often, infrastructure projects are narrowly focused on the delivery of a particular function. By contrast, this project provides a precedent for prioritizing both active travel and the ways in which it is accommodated into existing streets. Through extensive consultation, the design philosophy and approach considered the street in its entirety, including the safety and experience of all users, residents and businesses, as well as existing features and the character of Adelaide’s East End precinct. The broadened scope included the opportunistic planting of one hundred trees.
The jury commended the City of Adelaide and the project team for their leadership in delivering a replicable model for separated bikeways, including the preparation of a City Bikeways Design Guide, which may have application Australia-wide. This is an exemplary project for remaking our cities.
