JURY COMMENT
Delivered through a strong collaboration between the state government and Whadjuk Noongar traditional owners of Perth, Yagan Square is an exemplar of meaningful engagement and design process delivering city infill projects that improve the connectivity between built-up spaces and facilitate a deeper understanding of and connection to place. The design transports the textures, colours and narratives of Western Australia’s remote landscapes to the urban context, heightening awareness of the state’s diverse natural character.
The redevelopment of the former confluence point for the northern, western and southern train lines into Perth station has improved the flow of people between the Perth CBD and
Northbridge entertainment precinct, and enhanced the site with an enriching insight into Perth’s Aboriginal culture and history. Amenities, including play spaces, an open-air auditorium, cafes, bars and restaurants, have created an inner-city social hub for those working and living in the Perth CBD.
