WAVE DESIGN WINS ST KILDA JETTY
Portuguese architecture practice JJs Architectura has won the design ideas competition for a replacement jetty in Melbourne’s St Kilda. Titled “The Wave,” the winning concept is inspired by the “fluid geometries of the coast,” and proposes a thin walkway that opens out into an “aquatic plaza” that “reactivates the jetty’s civic function.” Brookes Jetty at St Kilda Beach, near Luna Park, was originally a 1.2-metre-wide slender timber structure at the end of a concrete storm water drain. In the winning design, the plaza would interface with the water, with two terraced “amphitheatres” facing the beach and the sea.
