HYBRID MANGROVE LIVING SHORELINES ADDRESS COASTAL IMPACTS
A research project by a team including National Centre for Coasts and Climate, the University of Melbourne and
Reef Design Lab is investigating the planting and growing of protective mangroves along Victoria’s coastline. Mangroves can protect shorelines by reducing wave heights and accreting and stabilizing sediment, but they can be difficult to restore if lost. The team has designed special planters to reduce wave energy and provide protection for juvenile plants as they grow.
