If you’re plan­ning on start­ing a new lawn us­ing turf rolls, now is a great time to get crack­ing. The soil is warm­ing up, which cre­ates an ideal en­vi­ron­ment for the turf to es­tab­lish new roots and start grow­ing in time for Christ­mas par­ties and back­yard cricket. To achieve the best re­sults from your new lawn, a lit­tle prepa­ra­tion will go a long way. Re­move any ex­ist­ing lawn (and weeds) by spray­ing the area with weed­killer and af­ter the grass and weeds have died (in about two weeks), rake all the dead fo­liage up. To help cre­ate a soft layer for the new lawn to grow, make lots of holes in the soil with a gar­den fork (drive the fork about 5cm into the ground and then wig­gle it back and forth to loosen the soil). If the soil is par­tic­u­larly com­pacted or un­even, you can also ap­ply a layer of lawn top­soil. Ap­ply some or­ganic-based fertiliser over the area. It en­cour­ages rapid root de­vel­op­ment and en­cour­ages a health­ier, stronger lawn. Lay new turf rolls over the area in a brick pat­tern, fit­ting each piece snug­gly to­gether. It’s im­por­tant to keep the area moist as the grass es­tab­lishes and also to min­imise foot and pet traf­fic. Don’t mow your new lawn un­til it’s about 5-6cm high. Ap­ply a lawn fertiliser af­ter about six weeks to keep it well-fed and look­ing fan­tas­tic.
