MELBOURNE CUP MEANS PLAYFUL PRINTS FOR WOMEN

Life & Style Weekend - - CLOSET - WORDS: TAM WRIGLEY

One of the most fashion-forward events of the year, Melbourne Cup is galloping up fast and this year there are Instagram-worthy styles that onlookers will be drooling over. Mercedes Benz Fashion Festival in Brisbane last month showcased the spring/summer season trends and we are ready to transform these looks into track-side style. We are seeing a move away from traditional silhouettes, encouraging a more relaxed style this Melbourne Cup season. Get ready for playful prints, feminine lines, power suits and “IT” girl beauty. If you’re looking to use playful prints think fun, floaty and feminine. Romantic silhouettes were on the runway this season with bishop sleeves, hip-hugging mermaid-like midi skirts and relaxed waistlines. I encourage you to make a spring statement by print clashing in colourful twopiece style. Looking for more feminine lines? Structure is not everyone’s cup of tea and this trend is something to be admired when styled effortlessly. Soft peaches, lemon hues and pastel blues are on the radar, and why not be a little playful with asymmetrical hemlines and relaxed shapes. Your look can be completed with a brimmed hat and oversized earrings. A big standout this year on the fashion circuit was the power suit and this is one style I love. Nothing says confidences like a well-tailored suit and designers are changing the way it’s defined, stepping it up to incorporate the modern Girl Boss in all of us. It’s Melbourne Cup so it’s all about colour; why not step out in style in a colourful power suit. This season we are stepping away from the traditional millinery pieces and embracing the fresh flower look. What I love about this is you can create bespoke pieces that really add magic to your race day outfit, and for a fraction of the price. Get the colours you want to match your outfit. Just be careful though, it is bee-mating season... With Fashions on the Field, it doesn’t just stop with your outfit. Keep on point with your make-up too. Dewy skin is an easy go-to for race day. Depending what outfit you are wearing, you may need a bold lip which means keeping your eye make-up on the lighter side. In the words of Napoleon Perdis: less is more. What about the men, I hear you say. It’s no longer about the suit, but about the combination of accessories that is going to make the men put their best foot forward. Trending in the suit scene is deep royal blue with fine lines or checks. Don’t forget the pocket square, and this year the man brooch is here. Bumble bees, dragonflies, gold and diamond deer heads, golden beetles – your imagination is limitless when it comes to accessorising your race day look.
