Life & Style Weekend - - MAGAZINE | ARTS - WORDS: Tony Gill Tony Gill is co-director of Art on Cairncross and has been involved in the visual arts on the Sunshine Coast for over 24 years.

One of the newer galleries in the Sunshine Coast hinterland is Maleny Art Direct, or MAD. Located on Maleny’s Maple St, the gallery is certainly a breath of fresh air. As visitors enter, they find themselves transported into another realm bathed in colour and texture – from stunning clay sculptures, metal art, bark art and hand-blown glass, to timeless acrylic and watercolour paintings, created predominantly by local artists. MAD was formed three years ago by owners Joanne Howard and artist Lindsay Muir. They started to notice a gap between the huge number of artists nestled within the creative surrounds of the hinterland and accessibility to the existing art galleries to exhibit their works. Today, MAD proudly showcases more than 20 remarkably talented artists in an intimate setting. Wander through the gallery and be impressed by the works of awardwinning national and international artists, such as Gary Myers, Lindsay Muir, Vanessa Perske, Nick Carey and Jane Nicol,. Curator Joanne and her staff are always willing to share the unique stories behind each artist and their one-of-a-kind pieces.
