Life & Style Weekend - - ESCAPE -

A little glimpse at the country’s rustic past while not losing any luxuries is what visitors can expect from the Saltbush Retreat. It was recently taken over by Damien and Judy Kennedy and David and Tanya Neal, who are seasoned accommodation providers, having run the Longreach Motor Inn for 12 years. The retreat is the only 4.5-star property in Longreach and offers fully self-contained comforts. Rooms are decked out in charming gems from yesteryear, such as oil lamps that have been electrified and clever metal work. For those who enjoy gazing at the stars, the outdoor bath tubs are just the way to relax after a long day of exploring. Just a short stroll from the Qantas Founders Museum and Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame, it’s in the ideal location for visitors. Mr Kennedy said the rooms were comfortable and unique, and could be enjoyed at any time of the year with the help of air-conditioning. “There’s no doubt that because of the opening up of outback Australia over the last three or four decades, places like Uluru or Longreach, it’s because of those opportunities made available to our urban friends, more and more Australians are taking up that opportunity,” Mr Kennedy said. “The thing we have is the unique people and the unique product and we have to work very hard. “We don’t have the waves or the mountains, we have to do what we can to enhance what we have.”
