THIS IS ME

A REGULAR INSIGHT INTO SUNSHINE COAST PERSONALITIES

Life & Style Weekend - - MAGAZINE | BIG READ - PAUL CLOUT, DIRECTOR OF PAUL CLOUT DESIGN

Paul Clout is director of Noosaville-based building and design company Paul Clout Design. Having been operating out of Noosa for more than 30 years, Paul is the creative backbone behind many of the Sunshine Coast’s luxury homes.

As Paul modestly describes his work: “We design relatively upmarket homes in various parts of the country”.

Favourite time of day and why?

Early mornings. I’m usually up early, either surfing, Suping, or running. There’s not so many people around at that time, so it’s quiet and nature seems a little sharper and brighter.

What excites you?

Food, chocolate, travel, exploring new places, plus seeing people do well and succeed – not only in their jobs and business but personal lives as well.

Favourite sport? Player or spectator?

Surfing; player. It’s the sport that’s all about just getting out and having some fun with your mates. You don’t have to be that good to enjoy it and the ocean is always beautiful.

I don’t mind being a spectator – most of the guys and girls on the world surf tour are pretty exciting to watch and, of course, hats off to local boy Julian Wilson.

Best childhood memory?

I grew up in Nowra on the south coast of NSW and the nearest beach was about 20km away. So way before I had my driver’s licence, I used to hitchhike out to the surf, either alone or with a couple of friends. You could get away with a lot more back then.

Where were you born?

Wollongong, NSW. I moved to Noosa in 1983.

Where would you like to holiday?

The Amalfi Coast, Italy, is a favourite, or the Hawaiian Islands – I could just keep going back. And Queenstown, New Zealand, in winter. But the bucket list is Alaska and Maldives.

Cats or dogs? Do you have a pet?

No, but definitely a dog over a cat.

Who are your heroes?

My wife – she’s amazing and has to put up with me 24/7. My dad – he was a legend.

Mick Fanning and Steph Gilmore are my surf heroes – the way they surf and then conduct themselves is inspiring. And Jesus – the most amazing man to walk on our planet.

Dream job?

Professional surfer. Ha ha, as if. I’m dreaming there.

What will you be doing in 10 years?

I am very blessed and enjoy the life I am living now, so not too much needs to change.

What’s the best thing about living on the Sunshine Coast?

My wife and I often say how good would it be to holiday in Noosa, but we already live here so we are pretty fortunate.

Noosa has an abundance of beautiful beaches and waterways, the national parks, the climate is warm so you can enjoy the outdoors all-year round. Then there are heaps of nice little cafes and restaurants to dine in and hang out.

PHOTOS: (MAIN) CHE CHAPMAN; CONTRIBUTED

LUXURY LIVING: Paul Clout; and two examples of award-winning homes on the Sunshie Coast by his building and design company Paul Clout Design.
