A DEDICATED SPACE TO CREATE
The idea came out of a chance meeting at the Burning Man festival in Nevada.
Emilia Lorena had a dream of running a community hub for artists and musicians and today that dream has become a reality, in the shape of Mo’s Desert Clubhouse.
Located on an industrial estate in Burleigh Heads, the creative zone draws creative minds from all over the Gold Coast who are keen to make use of the rehearsal rooms and stages where they can hone their craft.
“This is the culmination of a heap of ideas coming together as one,” Emilia said.
“We wanted a big shell of a space to make our own. We’ve been open for two years and we’ve been working with the Gold Coast City to come up with a zone to do what we do.
“One night we can have a death metal show, then the next morning I’m hosting a hen’s party or a yoga class, the possibilities are endless.
“We have a lot of young artists on the coast who need a space to rehearse and there’s a huge range, a big variety of musicians.
“It’s been a long dream and I think we’re at the point now where it’s all about to happen.”
Emilia thinks that as a city, the Gold Coast draws creative people from all around.
“I get emails all the time asking where there are more spaces like this, because there is a need for places like this and I think that’s the future of the Gold Coast,” she said.
“Artists want to play live and people are looking for somewhere to go on a weekend to hear them. I’ve been told by council that we are paving the way for live music with this project.”
