Inside the Sunshine Coast’s brand new Sports Hub, which has been developed to promote active recreation and generate positive health and wellbeing outcomes, Miguel Rojano has established a new state of the art fitness facility, O2 Performance. A world-class centre is available to everyone and supported by allied health such as exercise physiology, physiotherapy, myotherapy and dietetics, providing an all-encompassing and much needed service for the Sunshine Coast community.

Miguel’s journey has been one of highs and lows including battles with mental health, homelessness and a sense of being lost whilst trying to find his calling in life. He always knew he wanted to do something to help the community but didn’t know what he was searching for or how to get there. After working in a major supermarket chain for over 10 years and constantly suppressing the feeling to do more, Miguel enrolled to begin a bachelor’s degree in science (sports and exercise) at USC and later went on to complete a master’s degree and qualify as an exercise scientist and exercise physiologist.

Gaining employment at Matthew Flinders Anglican College as the strength and

conditioning coach, Miguel had finally found his calling in his mid-thirties. His reputation grew quickly and the school gym was opened up to the public. Needing more space to fulfil his desire to help people, Miguel opened his own gym in North Buderim where he successfully, trained and worked with many elite athletes but the work most important to him was with those who came to him feeling, lost, alone or inadequate, just as he had many years ago.

It took some convincing for Miguel to accept the opportunity at O2 Performance but realising the positive impact a state-ofthe-art facility could have on the Coast was too good to pass up. Since opening the doors in June this year, that vision is being realised with positive partnerships and connections with Community Solutions, Endeavour Foundation, Thompson institute and a number of local schools and sporting teams.

O2 Performance is fitted out with brand new cardio and strength equipment and has three designated lifting zones, spin and group fitness studios, 110sq m Astro Turf functional training zone, a four lane 60m sprint track and an exercise testing lab. Open to the community, it offers facilities for everyone,

including injury or surgery rehabilitation, prehabilitation, group fitness classes, personal training, strength training, kid’s classes, sports development training and exercise testing. Complete with a children’s creche and a café at the entrance, O2 Performance is perfect for parents of young children wanting to live a healthy lifestyle.

Within O2 Performance, is the newly created Sunshine Coast Sports Institute, which provides both talents identified and local representative athletes with integrated support and high-performance sports services such as access to the Smartasport training system.

Athletes participating in the SCSI program will develop their sports specific attributes, receive education on injury management and prevention, nutrition, drugs in sport, sports psychology and much more. They will also be provided with structured, supervised, progressive exercise programs and most importantly, a positive pathway to athletic success.

The state-of-the-art exercise testing lab has been sparking a lot of interest as it allows unique testing to be available for the general population as well as athletes. The testing lab has the ability to conduct a wide range of tests including gait analysis, vertical jump, hip adduction/abduction, hamstring strength, V02 max testing, resting metabolic rate, shoulder strength, balance and posture and more. Representatives from national and state-level sporting teams have already been travelling to the region to visit the facility and with Lake Kawana accommodation, sporting fields and the aquatic centre all within walking distance, there is a real opportunity to increase sports tourism to the region.
