openSUSE Tumbleweed
There are two openSUSE distros in existence, We have included the Leap branch before, which follows a traditional release-based pattern, requiring reinstallation or at least a major update every so often. It also means you have to wait until the next release to get the latest non-essential upgrades. Tumbleweed, which we have on the DVD this month, is a rolling release distro. That means it doesn’t have individual release versions – new versions of each program appear as they become available. This can mean a slightly larger number of updates but there’s never a need for a major overhaul – you always have the latest version of the distro after applying the updates.
There are good and bad sides to this. The good is you always have the latest software, the bad is you always have the latest software, even if it isn’t extensively tested yet. If you want a rock solid stable distro, look elsewhere, but if you like to get the new stuff early, give Tumbleweed a go.
