As you can see, this magazine is full of colour images, mostly screenshots of various applications running on Linux. Taking screenshots is a common routine for many people, not just writers and reviewers: you may sometimes want to show off your desktop eye candy in a “show your desktop” forum thread or social network. LXF recognizes the importance of reliable and featureful screenshot-taking software, and we previously wrote about Screencloud ( LXF226) and Ksnip ( LXF223).

Now its the turn of another independent attempt to make the ultimate app of that class. According to the developer’s notice, Screenshotgun is at the alpha stage, but we still found it useful and very capable.

The application sits in your system tray: once you click its icon, it invokes a free selection mode, allowing you to define an area that will be grabbed. You’ll also see a stylish Screenshotgun floating panel with some extra tools.

Once you have made a selection with your mouse, you can use these floating buttons to add lines, arrows, ellipses or text captions – a basic but still decent set of annotation options. When you’re done, press the Fire button below or just hit Enter to push your screenshot online. Screenshotgun is a cloudoriented app, so you’ll need to have set up a connection to Dropbox, Google Drive or Yandex Disk. Else, there is the original screenshotgun.com server integration, which you can use if you somehow need (or simply prefer) to avoid proprietary cloud services. The server code is open source too, so you can choose to roll out your personal web server for hosting screenshots and combine the convenience of a cloud with better privacy.

We can conclude that using Screenshotgun is the easiest way to publish your images online. With one hit of a button you get your screenshot uploaded to the cloud, plus a direct HTTPS link to your image copied to the clipboard, ready to paste. The whole thing is very fluid and easy!
