Alexander Tolstoy hasn’t been mining Bitcoin at his local USSR Nuclear Base, he’s too busy mining for top FOSS, including LibreOffice, Butteraugli,Telegram-Qt,LatteDock, Dosbox-X,Nitroshare,TupiTube, Polybar,MATE,PhaserQuest and SDLPoP.
LibreOffice is the world’s most popular and widely adopted open source set of essential office applications, and its name carries weight well beyond the Linux ecosystem. The more observant among you will have noticed homeprinted notices and adverts posted around the neighbourhood that feature the distinctive Liberation Serif font – which is the default one in LibreOffice Writer. It’s just one of the everyday pointers that indicate this office suite has gained tremendous popularity in recent years. The new release includes a raft of welcome features and updates. Perhaps the most talked-about visual change is the Notebookbar. It first made an appearance back in 2016, but now more than ever, is reminiscent of the Ribbon in MicrosoftOffice. To start using this new toolbar layout and the View menu you’ll need to go to Tools> Options>Advanced and check the ‘Enable experimental features’ option.
Apart from user interface experiments, there’s plenty more to enjoy. LibreOffice now sports full support of OpenPGP keys that can be used to sign ODF documents on any desktop platform. The OOXML interoperability has been improved, which means that various small features now work better when you convert your ODT file to DOCX and vice versa. Embedded objects, crossreferences, MailMerge fields and forms have always been a headache, but now they should work much better.
The other new feature that hasn’t seen much light (undeservingly) is the “Grammar by” model for Hunspell. The grammar check function can now automatically recognise new versions of a word formed with affixes or compounds. Previously, you had to add each form of an unknown word to the LibreOffice dictionary manually.
We heartily recommend that you check out the shiny, new LibreOffice6.0. It works great and looks fresh, and also includes the icon theme that matches the ElementaryOS style. Note that the new KF5 integration plugin for Qt5 is still experimental and, as we went to press, hasn’t shipped yet.
