System76 Thelio high-end Linux PC
Thelio is a Linux-toting desktop designed to take on boutique PC builders, with three configurable form factors available.
System76, the Colorado-based company that has made a name for itself building laptops and desktops with Linux – either in the form of Ubuntu or its own Pop! OS distro – has unveiled its new range of Thelio PCs. These are designed to offer premium hardware in stylishly designed chassis, while maintaining the open hardware ethos of the company.
System76’s YouTube video ( http://bit.ly/ LXFThelioYouTube) highlights the features and design of the Thelio, Thelio Major and Thelio Massive – the three form factors that make up the Thelio range. The Thelio comes with a choice of AMD Ryzen or Intel Core processors, up to 32GB of RAM, an AMD or Nvidia GPU and up to 24TB of storage in a small form-factor design, and starts at $1,099.
The Thelio Major comes with a choice of AMD’s high-end consumer Threadripper CPU or Intel’s Core-X processor, up to 128GB RAM, up to four GPUs and 46TB of storage, and starts at $2,299. Finally, the larger high-end Thelio Massive coms with two Intel Xeon CPUs, support for up to 768GB of ECC memory, four GPUs and up to 86TB of storage for $2,899. Each PC can be configured at the System 76 website ( https://system76.com/desktops), and some people are already having fun, making configurations worth an eye-watering $80,000. However, more sensible setups show that you can get stylish and powerful PCs based on open software and hardware, though obviously they do also include proprietary hardware as well. System 76 is taking pre-orders now, with shipments beginning by the time you read this issue.
