we did not suspect that saving space would mean knocking around so much until we came across Escape Space, a nice little arcade platformer. Escape Space is a miniature game in every sense: it features lots of small objects, and, as the game is a work in progress, has just two levels. Still, it’s very fun and playable, and more importantly offers a fresh take on what a Breakout-like game entails.

Escape Space puts you in control of a rover that wanders around a large space station. There are no weapons, and the rover can’t do anything other than just move. Several launchers around the station shoot plasma fireballs, and your goal is to knock those flaming clots sideways in order to direct them away.

Fireballs need to reach blue goals and sometimes burn down green square bricks. This is what makes it somewhat similar to a Breakout game, but you don’t need to catch each and every ball – it’s fine to let them float chaotically. The only limitation is time and therefore it’s important to busily drive around with your rover and kick fireballs to the right place.

Escape Space only looks simple: in a real game it takes time and skill to complete the missions. The game exposes how hard it can be to rake up moving objects that persistently fly away from you. When all the goals are hit and bricks are eliminated, you need to hurry to reach the exit point, which is supposed to be a teleporter for leaving the station. The first level offers some useful text tooltips and guides a new player through the level, but later on you need to find all bricks, goals and the teleporter yourself. Escape Space requires the Godot game engine in order to run. Launch the Godot editor and open the Escape Space zip archive as a project, then hit the play button.

Background music, fluid graphics and level design are remarkably good for such a small game as Escape Space.
