Most games made with the LÖVE framework share the same nostalgic 2D feel, and often feature graphic and audible elements in the style of retro 8-bit games. However, we picked Mr.

Rescue not because of its aesthetic, but due to its original game concept, which is a rare thing these days.

While Mr. Rescue may look like a classic arcade platformer with numerous ladders and floors, the goal is actually totally different. You need to save civilians in a burning building by picking them up and throwing them out of windows. There are many factors a firefighter (you) should keep in mind, though, because the game has quite a complex and developed mechanic.

The main objective is to rescue people rather than put out fires, although it is possible to use the water cannon (pressing Space) for shooting down both static flames and walking flame-like enemies. Various extra elements are spread around each level. The firefighter can find coolants, water tank top-ups, heat resistance and a few more helpful power-ups in order to stay alive for longer.

Time, as well as fire, is your enemy. There’s a ‘heat bar’ with a constantly increasing value; unless you rescue all civilians before reaching the point of overheating, it’s game over. It also ends if you escape yourself but leave too many people in the fire. Sometimes it’s harder to reach people if they’re behind a closed door, so that the firefighter will need to crush the door with the cannon first. Mr. Rescue is a great example of a game where the player needs to take decisions very quickly, with no time to stay idle. It also trains you to prioritise things in the right way. The fun background music, colourful graphics and sense of urgency are what make Mr. Rescue so special.
