pekka Kana 2 was a successful proprietary arcade game made by Piste Games in the mid2000s. This ‘Community Edition’ is an open source port of the original with code clean-ups and community additions, but largely it’s the same beloved game. Colourful professional artwork, smart level design, weapons, secrets, funny music and a fascinating plot – this is a true gem for everyone whose heart beats faster when remembering Super Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog.
The main character is Pekka, a Finnish rooster guarding a henhouse full of chickens. An evil spooky monster bird steals all the chickens, so Pekka goes on a journey in order to bring the little ones back. He fights through evil frogs, hedgehogs and rabbits and eats apples and oranges along his way. So far, so ordinary, but many nice details make the game special. First, Pekka’s main weapon is the speaking tube, that kills enemies by rendering them faint, which makes the makes the game acceptable for small kids. Another thing is that many levels have a countdown timer and motivate the player to hurry up. Some levels are difficult to complete and require good skills and precise timing, but the game is never dull! The rooster can bring an inventory with him, including healing ‘feathers’ that act like a portable medkit. Moving platforms, flying birds, in-game puzzles and some cool extra weapons are really fun. The game is easy to build (just type $ make ), and the only thing you might possibly want to adjust are the controls, as the default bindings are quite unusual to say the least.
