Eqonomize

We first looked at Eqonomize when it was originally launched back in 2006. But with a late April 2020 update we’re back, seeing how the software is handling the finances 14 years on. It’s a Qt5-based home budgeting tool, so it’s easier to understand and not as imposing as other options without sacrificing essential features.

This is why one of the first things you’ll notice is its minimal use of screen space. There‘s no need to keep the window maximised, as everything fits into a compact window without losing any information. Another appealing difference is that Eqonomize is ready to record your transactions right away. There are no wizards and account settings at start-up – by default you get a ready-to-use blank account set up to use the currency of your country.

The interface of Eqonomize has six tabs, of which Accounts & Categories always loads first by default and provides the overview of all your finances. Next, there are lists of expenses and incomes, transfers, securities and a schedule. Eqonomize supports double-entry bookkeeping and enables you to evaluate your ledger at any time (Accounts>ledger). The application also offers easy-to-understand dialogs for conducting split transactions (several transactions as one record), managing loans, debts and securities and scheduling recurring transactions and so on.

After a while, when you collect some money flow statistics, you can view reports and charts. A colourful pie-chart with all your expenses is just a few clicks away. Eqonomize has just two types of statistical reports: development over time and categories comparison, but these are fine for gaining a picture of what’s going on. All the information is stored in human-readable XML format and can be optionally exported to the industry-standard QIF format.

You can build it direct from source from its Git, otherwise pre-built Ubuntu binaries are available on its website alongside Appimage and Snap options.
