The Awesome window manager ships with a few themes out of the box located in the /usr/share/awesome/ themes directory. You’ll also find a host of widgets and other themes for Awesome online, many of them hosted on Github and some linked to from the project’s website. To switch between the different themes, you must edit the ~/.config/ awesome/rc.lua file and define the theme that you wish to use.
We’re running the latest version of Enlightenment (0.24.2). You’ll find a host of themes tailored for Enlightenment on the https://enlightenment-themes.org website. Not all themes are compatible with the different versions of Enlightenment, and only one theme is tagged as supporting the latest version. However, we were able to easily get several different themes working without any additional steps. Themes for Enlightenment are distributed as Edj files and the project provides a graphical utility to help you switch between themes. Although conventional wisdom suggests placing the theme files in a directory such as ~/.e/e/themes, the theme switcher is incapable of accessing hidden files (dot directories).
You’ll find a host of themes for ICEWM and fvwm3 on the https://box-look.org website The fvwm3 window manager offers the choice of three wallpapers out of the box, and nothing else. But there aren’t many that explicitly support fvwm3. We tried our hand at fvwm-crystal, which claims to now support fvwm3 out of the box, but it failed to even load the desktop. Fiddling with other themes further broke the desktop, making the environment unusable.
Switching themes in ICEWM is much more straightforward. After downloading it, extract the files and move them in the /usr/ share/icewm/themes directory. You can then switch themes by selecting them from the Menu>themes.
There’s little to change in i3 except for the wallpaper and perhaps colour scheme for the panels. This can be done by tweaking the config file, or using the user-contributed themes available online, and mostly hosted on Github. The installation involves following a complicated process, however, and there’s no official i3 hosted documentation to assist you along the way.
