Richard Hughes, a maintainer of GNOME software (among other things) highlighted in a blog post that the Linux Vendor Firmware Service (LVFS) has now delivered a remarkable 50 million updates. LVFS (https://fwupd.org) is a secure portal for uploading and distributing firmware updates.

As Richard explains in his blog (https://bit.ly/ lxf290gnomeblog), “Just seven years ago Christian [Schaller, director for Desktop, Graphics and Infotainment at Red Hat] asked me to ‘make firmware updates work on Linux’ and we have a thriving client project that respects both your freedom and your privacy, and a thriving ecosystem of hardware vendors who consider Linux users first-class citizens.”

Richard’s blog post also celebrated the release of fwupd 1.8.0. This is an opensource daemon that’s used for installing firmware updates. It’s well worth checking out the release notes at https://bit.ly/ lxf290fwupd for a full rundown of what’s new in the latest version of the daemon. As for LVFS, Richard is now looking towards “the next 50 million updates”, and highlights how fast LVFS has been growing since its launch, with it now “we regularly ship more than 2m updates a month.” A large part of this growth, according to Richard, is thanks to Google. “The tech giant has been an amazing partner in encouraging vendors to ship updates on the LVFS and shipping fwupd in ChromeOS.”

Richard also hints at “super” secret things coming, while also promising to “push the ecosystem towards transparency, open source and respecting the user’s privacy.” Thanks to the LVFS portal, using Linux on a range of devices is easier and more user-friendly than ever.
