There’s no shortage of Doom 2 mods, but Total Chaos is such a brilliant remaster that you wouldn’t have guessed its Doom 2 roots if we hadn’t spilled the beans.

The first-person shooter has six levels and does a stellar job of transforming Doom 2 into a horrorthemed survival bloodfest.

It relies on GZDoom, which is a 3D-accelerated Doom port that makes best use of the current hardware to add support for things such as dynamic lighting, sloped floors and other things that modernise the game’s visuals and make the gameplay more engaging overall.

You can grab the game from Flathub with flatpak install flathub com.moddb.TotalChaos . When it’s installed, you can run it from the distro’s application menu or by using the flatpak run com.moddb. TotalChaos command.

Total Chaos is set on the fictitious Fort Oasis island in the midst of a wind-battered sea. The island was once home to a buzzing coal mining community, which has now disappeared without a trace, leaving the facility abandoned.

The game launches with you waking up on the island after wrecking your ship. As you get your bearings, a voice on the walkie-talkie urges you to find them. To make your way around, you must fight your way through all kinds of horrifying creatures, each with their own unique attack patterns.

You fight through apartments, utility tunnels and other buildings before making your way to the city centre. On the way, you unravel the mystery of what happened through letters scattered around, along with a large battery of weapons. Sure, there are guns, but mostly you have to defend yourself with tyre irons, pickaxes and such. A normal day at work!

?? ?? Total Chaos is really well done, and does a stellar job of building tension, with its eerie soundscape and the usual tricks popular with the genre.
