KDE Plasma 6 takes shape
Plasma 6 will boast some super-hot features.
Plasma is superheated matter. It’s also the name of KDE’s super-hot user interface. The latest release of Plasma (5.27) is now available and KDE is encouraging the community to report any issues via https://community.kde.org/Get_ Involved/Issue_Reporting.
KDE has also begun talking about some of the exciting new updates that are due in the upcoming Plasma 6, which will use the new
Qt 6 framework.
One of the most turbo-charged changes is that you can now associate applications with a great deal more types of file in the Default Applications section of Settings.
The Colors section of System Settings still enables you to tweak subtle tones along the spectrum but this has now been reduced in size a little. The change is to make room for the upcoming Light/Dark theme, which KDE assures us will soon be included in Plasma 5.27 onwards. Once up and running, it can be set to switch automatically between light and dark themes, depending on the time of day.
There are also some minor tweaks, such as fixing the bug that showed ghostly sharp corners when the system displays rounded QtQuick-based ones. Other small but welcome changes include displaying battery levels when you hover the mouse over the icon of a connected audio device. KDE’s default music player Elisa also now only increments your song count at the very end of each track.
KDE has stated that the first release of Plasma 6 will be added as soon as possible, hopefully in late 2023.
