PLUG-IN INSTALLATION

-

There are currently three plug-in variants for using the layer effects in GIMP. They differ in their requirements and details of the features. Furthermore, this diversity reflects the importance of the effects for users.

Script: The simplest variant is a ScriptFu script that is executed via the built-in interpreter. It does not require any special prerequisites and runs on every GIMP installation. (However, the script must be adapted for the respective major GIMP version – 2.6, 2.8 or 2.10). The script provides the essential features of the Python variant, but it does not offer a preview. However, in many cases this is incredibly useful if many experiments are to be avoided.

Python script: These can be installed as an alternative to, but not with, the ScriptFu variant. It requires the Python2 support of GIMP, often provided via several packages. For Arch Linux, they are Python2 and gimp-python, for other distros they’re likely similar. The Python script is installed under ~/.config/ GIMP/2.10/plug-ins (or system-wide under /usr/lib/gimp/2.0/plug-ins). The x permission flag should be set by chmod a+x .../layerfx.py .

GEGL variant: The first GEGL-based variant of these filters is still very new – the project only started in May 2022 and is initially limited to some parts of the Bevel And Emboss filter, as well as an implementation of some other effects. At the moment, the use of this filter is still quite different from the classic implementations…

The installation is quite simple and is described in detail at https://github. com/LinuxBeaver. There are also readymade binaries available, which are copied into the /home//. local/share/gegl-0.4/plug-ins directory. Sometimes it is necessary to delete existing settings to be able to use the new version: rm -r ~/.config/GIMP/2.10/ filters/GimpGegl-gegl-effects-config. settings does this.
