Crispy Doom
Version: 5.12.0 Web: https://github.com/ fabiangreffrath/crispy-doom
We just can’t get enough of Doom. If you are like us, you can get your dose of Doom through one of the several ports. Unlike others, though, the goal of Crispy Doom is to preserve the original look, feel, limitations and quirks of the original. The game is compatible with the gazillions of mods and levels that were made before Doom was open sourced.
You can install the game from Flathub with flatpak install flathub io.github.fabiangreffrath.Doom . Before you can play Crispy Doom, you need a copy of the Doom files known as a WAD. If you don’t have them, you get them from the Internet Archive. You then fire up Crispy Doom by pointing it to the WAD file: $ flatpak run io.github.fabiangreffrath.Doom -iwad
~/path/to/GameFile.WAD
The game is based on the popular open source Doom port called Chocolate Doom, atop which it has added several interesting and useful improvements and enhancements.
For instance, the game supports widescreen rendering, which means that you can run it full-screen on your widescreen monitor with aspect ratios up to 24:9. The game also has an enhanced 640x400 display resolution, which might not seem like much, but is a stark improvement over the original (320x200) and makes the game look a lot better, especially when combined with gamma correction. Furthermore, in addition to support for single-player and multiplayer games, you can also play Crispy Doom over a network, unlike the original.
The game also has several enhancements to the original gameplay. Some notable improvements include the ability to jump, and enable free vertical looking. You can also enable a crosshair to aim and shoot more accurately. Many of these features are disabled by default, but can be easily enabled and tweaked as per your tastes.
