SET UP NOTE SYNCHRONISATION

-

1 Set up encryption

First, create a master password to encrypt your notes with – choose Tools > Manage Master Password. We recommend using your password manager to generate a strong 14-character password using a mix of letters, numbers and symbols, or a more memorable passphrase containing at least three unconnected words. Click Save after retyping the password or passphrase.

3 Choose self-hosted option

To connect via a self-hosted option like WebDAV or a folder kept in sync via other means (such as a desktop client), make your choice under Synchronisation Target and click Show Advanced Settings. Fill in the required details – click Check Synchronisation Configuration to test your settings. Choose the synchronisation interval (default is five minutes) and click OK.

2 Choose cloud sync target

Next, select Tools > Options > Encryption and click Enable Encryption. Re-enter your master password or passphrase and click OK to encrypt your notes. Now select Synchronisation and – if you want to use Joplin Cloud, Dropbox or OneDrive – click Open Sync Wizard followed by the relevant online service. Follow the prompts to log into your online account and grant Joplin access.

4 Get synced up

Once successfully connected, Joplin synchronises your notebooks to the cloud. When you come to set up Joplin on your remote client, follow the same procedure as before. If you set the same master password, then everything should synchronise in both directions – including any notebooks you may have already set up on your new device.
