If you are a fan of playing retro games on modern hardware, this one’s for you. Cannon Fodder was one of the most popular games on Amiga, and it now has an open source crossplatform version called Open Fodder, which works on modern computers without emulation.

The game is available on FlatHub, so you can install it with flatpak install flathub org.openfodder. OpenFodder . After it’s installed, run it from the Applications menu or with flatpak run org. openfodder.OpenFodder .

Open Fodder collates various game demos from back in the day, from several Amiga magazine coverdisk demos, including The One and Not Very Festive Fodder, as well as one PC demo from Future Publishing’s PC Format magazine.

To play the full game, you need assets from the retail Cannon Fodder releases. Open Fodder can grab assets from Cannon Fodder 1 and Cannon Fodder 2. If you don’t have the originals, you can buy them from GOG. Copy the game assets housed inside CF_ENG.

DAT to the ~/.var/app/org.openfodder.OpenFodder/ data folder, and you’re good to go.

They don’t cost much, but if you need convincing, you can get a taste for the game by playing the bundled demos, which are fun in themselves. The game is military-themed and involves a lot of shooting, but it requires some strategy as well. Your objective is to direct troops through missions, going up against enemy soldiers, bunkers and tanks. The controls are simple: use the mouse to point and left-click on the map to direct troops, and open fire on anything that moves with the right-click. Its simplicity is what makes the game so addictive.
