VULTURE CULTURE IN CROATIA

Lonely Planet (UK) - - Our Year Of Discovery - Mike MacEacheran, writer @MikeMacEacheran

My travel highlight… was hanging out with endangered griffon vultures on Cres. Before it stopped stock-still, before its unfeathered neck swivelled round, and before it looked me straight in the eye, I’d been watching unobser ved as one of these creatures moved with grace and precision. The Croatian island of Cres is one of its most spectacular habitats. To eyeball a scavenging male, just before it launched into flight, was as spine -tingling as it was haunting (croatia.hr). My low moment… was an elk bounding out in front of the car along a remote Swedish road. Brakes slammed and expletives filled the air and, thankfully, we narrowly avoided a crash. In 2019 I am most excited about… being in Cuba during the 500th anniversar y of Havana’s founding. I can’t imagine there ever being a better birthday party.
