Due south of Brno, just shy of the Aus­trian bor­der, is Mikulov, a beau­ti­ful town in Czech wine coun­try, once home to the re­gion’s big­gest Jewish pop­u­la­tion. To­day, not a sin­gle Jewish fam­ily lives here – but it has be­come a place of pil­grim­age for young peo­ple. In the old Jewish quar­ter, Ho­tel Tanzberg cel­e­brates its her­itage. In a light- filled modern restau­rant, chef Mar­cel Ih­nacˇák ser ves tra­di­tional recipes with gas­tro­nomic flair. Tr y del­i­cate chicken broth with home­made noo­dles and dill, or cholent – groats, white beans and shred­ded duck, topped with gherkins (five - course tast­ing menu £22; ho­tel-tanzberg.ch).
