NOTES

1

Shorten your stitch length to 1.5 for foundation paper piecing. Seam allowances are ¼in unless otherwise noted. WOF = width of fabric. Fabrics are Lucky by Lotta Jansdotter for Windham Fabrics.

CUTTING OUT

From the background fabric cut three 6½in squares. Save the remaining fabric for foundation paper piecing the background of the star blocks.

2

From the binding fabric cut three 2¼in x WOF strips. If desired, match the binding fabric to the print fabrics used to make the quilt top.

PIECE THE BLOCKS

3

Divide one of your paper squares into three (3) 2in x 6in rectangle sections, and cut up. Draw two lines at random angles on each of the three sections. Piece each of the sections, as outlined in the Technique Focus. Join and trim to 6½in square.

Repeat with two more paper squares to make a total of three (3) blocks.

4

Divide one of your paper squares into eight triangular sections. Then draw two lines across each section, as shown, to create a star pattern (Fig 1).

THESE PRETTY BLOCKS WOULD LOOK GREAT JOINED TOGETHER TO FORM AN IMPRESSIVE TABLE RUNNER. EXTRA NAPKINS ARE OPTIONAL.

5

Piece each section, using background fabric for the outer part of each piece. Join the triangular sections in pairs, then join the pairs to form two halves of the block. Finally, join these two sections along the centre (Fig 2). Remove papers and trim to 6 in square, centring the star.

6

Repeat steps 4-5 with two more of your paper squares to make a total of three star (3) blocks.

FINISHING

7

Lay out your blocks and background squares in three rows of three, using the image (left) as a guide. Piece together the blocks into rows, then join the rows together to finish the mini quilt top.

8

Make a quilt sandwich with your quilt top, batting and backing fabric. Quilt as desired. We quilted diagonal lines.

9

Join your binding strips end to end. Press lengthwise, wrong sides together, and use to bind your quilt. We also used some scraps from the piecing in the binding, to match with the quilt top along the bottom edge.
