CUTTING OUT

1

From Fabric A (light prints) cut sixteen (16) 45/ 8in x WOF strips. Subcut into one hundred and forty four (144)

45/ 8in squares.

2

From Fabric B (dark prints) cut:

■ Fifteen (15) 4¼in x WOF strips. Subcut into seventy two (72)

8in x 4¼in rectangles.

■ Four (4) 45/ 8in x WOF strip. Subcut into thirty six (36) 45/ 8in squares.

■ Eight (8) 4¼in x WOF strips. Subcut into seventy two (72) 4¼in squares.

3

From Fabric C (dark pinks) cut twelve (12)

45/ 8in x WOF strips. Subcut into one hundred and eight (108) 45/ 8in squares.

4

From Fabric D (light pinks) cut eight (8)

4¼in x WOF strips. Subcut into seventy two (72) 4¼in squares.

5

From the binding fabric cut ten (10)

2½in x WOF strips.

PIECING THE BLOCKS

6

Mark a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of all Fabric A

45/ 8in squares.

7

Pair each 45/ 8in Fabric A square with a

45/ 8in Fabric B square, RST. Sew a line ¼in from either side of the marked diagonal line, then cut in half, straight down the marked line (Fig 1).

8

Press the seam towards the darker fabric and trim each HST to 4¼in square to make seventy two (72) Fabric A/B HST units.

9

Repeat steps 7–8 using Fabric A and C squares to make two hundred and sixteen (216) Fabric A/C HST units.

10

Arrange the following pieces as shown (Fig 2):

■ Two (2) Fabric B 8in x 4¼in rectangles.

■ Two (2) Fabric B 4¼in squares.

■ Two (2) Fabric D 4¼in squares.

■ Two (2) Fabric A/B HSTs.

■ Six (6) Fabric A/C HSTs. 11

Sew the pieces together in rows, then sew the rows together to complete one Spool Block (Fig 3).

12

Repeat steps 9–11 to make thirty six (36) Spool Blocks.

13

Lay out your blocks in six rows of six. Sew the blocks together in rows, then sew the rows together to complete the quilt top (Fig 4).

14

Cut the backing fabric in thirds across the width, so you have three pieces approximately 99in x WOF. Remove the

selvedges and rejoin the pieces with a in seam. Press the seams open.

15

Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then the quilt top centrally and right side up. Baste the layers together using your preferred method.

16

Quilt as desired. Stephanie quilted long, curved lines across the length of the quilt using a plain white thread. Trim off the excess batting and backing fabric and square up the quilt.

17

Join the binding strips together end to end using diagonal seams. Fold in half lengthwise, WST, and press. Sew the binding to the front of the quilt, folding a mitre at each corner. Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place to finish.
