Love Patchwork & Quilting

THIS IS A GREAT PROJECT FOR USING UP SCRAPS – WE EVEN USED THEM FOR THE BINDING

-

CUTTING OUT

1 From each of the pink, yellow and orange fabrics cut three (3) 3½in squares and two (2) 6½in x 1in strips.

2 From the background fabric cut twenty one (21) 6½in x WOF strips. Subcut into sixty four (64) 6½in squares and sixty four (64) 6½in x 5½in pieces.

3 From the binding fabric cut eight (8) 2½in x WOF strips and set aside for binding the quilt.

ASSEMBLING THE BLOCKS

4

Sew a 1in x 6½in print strip to either long side of the sixty four (64) 5½in x 6½in background rectangles (Fig A). Be sure to mix up the prints between the blocks for an even balance of fabrics.

5 Draw a diagonal line on the reverse of one hundred and twenty eight (128) 3½in print squares.

6 Place one print square on the corner of one block from step 4. Sew along the marked line (Fig B). Trim ¼in from the sewn line and press open.

7 Sew a second square to the adjacent corner in the same way (Fig C and D). Repeat steps 6–7 to make sixty four blocks.

8 Take four of the print fabric 3½in squares. Sew together in pairs, then sew the pairs together to make a four-patch block. Make sixteen (16) four-patch blocks.

9 Arrange one four-patch block with four strip blocks and four 6½in background

squares (Fig E). Sew the units together in rows, then sew the rows together to finish one star block. Make sixteen (16) star blocks.

10 Arrange the blocks in four rows of four blocks. Sew the blocks together in rows, and then sew the rows together to complete the quilt top.

QUILTING AND FINISHING

11 Cut the backing fabric in half across the width. Remove the selvedges and sew the two pieces together using a in seam. Press the seam open.

12 Press the quilt top and backing well. Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then the quilt top centrally and right side up. Baste the layers together using your preferred method.

13 Quilt as desired. Susan quilted straight lines through her square blocks and a free-motion design across the background. 14 Trim off the excess batting and backing fabric and square up the quilt.

15 Sew the binding strips end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open and trim away the dog ears. Fold in half lengthways, WST, and press.

16 Sew the binding to the right side of the quilt, folding a mitre at each corner.

17 Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place to finish.
