NOTES

■ Seam allowances are ¼in, unless otherwise noted.

■ Press seams open, unless otherwise instructed.

■ Press after each seam.

■ FPP = Foundation Paper Piecing.

■ HST = half-square triangle.

■ WOF = width of fabric.

■ Find a tutorial on foundation paper piecing on the blog (lovepatchworkandquilting. com/blog/foundation-paper-piece)

■ We precut our fabric for Foundation Paper Piecing with a generous margin for error, but if you’re a confident quilter you may prefer to cut your pieces smaller.

FABRICS USED

■ Darker and lighter coloured fabrics in each block are various coloured solids.

■ Background fabric is Kona Cotton in White by Robert Kaufman.

■ Binding fabric and charcoal fabric in each block is Linen Texture in Charcoal by Makower.

THIS QUILT IS A GREAT STASH BUSTER AS YOU USE UP SCRAPS IN TWO COLOURS FOR EACH BLOCK!

bottom right. Subcut the remaining twenty five (25) rectangles along the diagonal from top right to bottom left.

From the background fabric cut:

■ Seven (7) 2½in x WOF strips and subcut into fifty (50) 2½in x 5in rectangles. Subcut twenty five (25) of the rectangles along the diagonal from top left to bottom right, and subcut the remaining twenty five (25) rectangles along the diagonal from top right to bottom left.

■ Eight (8) 6½in x WOF strips. Sew the strips into pairs along the short ends. Trim two

(2) to 6½in x 60½in and two (2) to

6½in x 72½in.

■ Five (5) 6½in x WOF strips. Subcut into twenty five (25) 6½in squares.

■ Nine (9) 3½in x WOF strips. Subcut into one hundred (100) 3½in squares.

From the binding fabric cut seven (7)

2½in x WOF strips.

PIECING THE BLOCKS

6 Foundation Paper Piece the diamond templates using the light fabric

3½in x 6½in rectangles for Section 1, the charcoal 2½in x 5in rectangles for Sections 2 and 4, and the background fabric 2½in x 5in rectangles for Sections 3 and 5.

7 Trim each template along the dashed lines and remove papers from the back.

8 Draw a diagonal line on the back of the light 2in and 3½in squares.

9 Align the 2in squares right sides together with one corner of each of the background fabric 3½in squares (Fig 1).

10 Sew along the marked line and trim away excess fabric ¼in beyond the seam line. Press open (Fig 2).

11 Repeat steps 9–10 to create triangles on each of the four corners of the dark 6½in squares using the light 3½in squares (Fig 3). This completes your centre units.

12 Arrange one centre unit, four diamond units and four corner units (Fig 4). Sew the units together in rows then sew the rows together to complete one block. Repeat this process to make twenty five (25) blocks.

13 Arrange the blocks in five rows of five. Sew the blocks together in rows and then sew the rows together to complete your quilt centre.

14 Sash the sides of the quilt top with the

6 in x 60 in strips of background fabric then the top and bottom with the

6 in x 72 in strips.

QUILTING AND FINISHING

15 Cut the backing fabric in half across the width. Remove the selvedges and re-join the pieces along the length with a

in seam. Press seam open. The backing needs to be at least 2in to 3in bigger than the quilt top all around.

16 Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting, then the quilt top centrally, right side up. Baste in your preferred method.

17 Quilt as desired. Lynne quilted a diagonal cross-hatch of lines 2in apart using a white Aurifil 50wt thread.

18 Trim off any excess batting and backing fabric and square up the quilt.

19 Sew the binding strips together end-to-end using straight seams and press seams open. Fold in half lengthwise, WST, and press.

20 Sew the binding to the right side of the quilt, mitring the corners, then fold the binding to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place to finish.
