CUTTING OUT

1

From the background fabric cut:

■ Two (2) 3½in squares.

■ Four (4) 5½in squares. Cut each square on both diagonals for a total of sixteen (16) triangles. You will only use fourteen of these triangles.

■ One (1) 5in x 21in rectangle.

■ One (1) 8½in x 21in rectangle.

2

Choose four (4) of the colourful solids to be the outside squares in the braid. From each of these fabrics cut two (2)

3½in squares.

3

From each of the final three (3) colourful solids cut one (1) 3½in square.

4

From the backing fabric cut two (2) 13in x 20½in rectangles.

ASSEMBLING THE CUSHION FRONT

5

Arrange your 3½in squares and your background triangles as per the layout diagram (Fig 1). 6

Sew rows 1–7 together, then join the rows together to form the centre of the cushion top.

7

Sew the 5in x 21in rectangle to the top of the cushion centre, and the 8½in x 21in rectangle to the bottom (Fig 2). Press seams towards the large background rectangles.

COMPLETING AND FINISHING

8

Make a quilt sandwich by placing the lining fabric right side down, the batting on top, then the cushion top right side up. The lining fabric and batting are slightly larger than the cushion top to allow for any movement. Baste the layers together using your preferred method.

9 #

Quilt as desired. Anna quilted diagonal lines at 1in intervals to create a grid pattern. Trim to 20½in square.

10

Along one edge of each of the

20½in x 13in rectangles, press under a ¼in hem and then press under another ¼in. Topstitch in place.

11

Place the cushion top right side up and then, right side down and matching the raw edges of the cushion top, place one backing rectangle on top. In the same way, place the second rectangle on top so the hemmed edges overlap in the middle.

12

Pin and stitch all around the edge with a ¼in seam allowance. For extra strength, sew a second line of stitches where the hemmed edges overlap. Zigzag the raw edges to prevent fraying.

13

Turn right side out, gently pushing out the corners, and insert a cushion pad.
