CUTTING OUT

1

From each print fabric cut two (2) triangles, using Template A.

2

From the background fabric cut fourteen

(14) 7in x WOF strips. Fold each strip in half, matching up the selvedges. Use Template B to cut triangles from the folded strips. You will need two hundred and sixteen (216) triangles in total. Cutting from

the folded strips means half of the triangles will be cut in a reverse orientation.

3

From the binding fabric cut seven (7)

2¼in x WOF strips.

PIECING THE BLOCKS

4

Join one background triangle to the side of a print triangle, RST. Match the long sides and place the background triangle ¼in up from the bottom corner of the print triangle (Fig A). Press open.

5

Repeat step 4 on the opposite side of the triangle (Fig B).

6

Press the unit open and trim to

6½in square. Make sure to leave ¼in of background fabric above the top point of the print triangle (Fig C).

7

Repeat steps 4–6 with the remaining triangles to make one hundred and eight

(108) triangle blocks.

ASSEMBLING THE QUILT TOP

8

Arrange the blocks into twelve rows, each with nine blocks, referring to the photo for colour placement. Arrange the direction of the triangles alternately. Place each set of matching print triangles together to form a

diamond shape, with the darker prints in the upper left and lower right corners, fading to light in the centre of the quilt.

9

Once you are happy with your layout, join the blocks into rows. Join the rows to complete the quilt top.

QUILTING AND FINISHING

10

Cut the backing fabric in half across the width. Remove the selvedges and re-join the pieces along the length with a

in seam. Press seam open. The backing needs to be at least 2in–3in bigger than the quilt top all around, to allow for any movement during quilting. 11

Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, place the batting on top, and then centre the quilt top right side up. Baste according to your preferred method.

12

Quilt as desired. Kristin used a walking foot to quilt straight lines 3/8in apart in the background, and free motion loops in the print diamonds.

13

Trim off any excess batting and square up the quilt.

14

Sew the binding strips together end-to-end using straight seams, and press seams open. Fold in half lengthwise, wrong sides together, and press.

15

Sew the binding to the right side of the quilt, folding a mitre at each corner, then fold the binding to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place.
