Recre­ate clear blue rip­ples on the shore with ex­quis­ite quilt­ing and aqua­ma­rine fab­rics in an at­mo­spheric piece

NOTES

■ Seam al­lowances are ¼in, un­less oth­er­wise noted.

■ Press seams open, un­less oth­er­wise in­structed.

■ RST = right sides together.

■ WOF = width of fab­ric.

■ HST = Half-square Tri­an­gle.

■ To achieve a tonal ef­fect like this, you will need four colours from light (Fab­ric A) to dark (Fab­ric D).

Solids are all from the Painter’s Palette col­lec­tion by Paint­brush Stu­dio Fab­rics:

■ Fab­ric A: Azure

■ Fab­ric B: Aruba

■ Fab­ric C: Pale Aqua

■ Fab­ric D: Gulf­stream

CUT­TING OUT

NOTE: La­bel your cut Fab­ric A pieces A– F. Th­ese will be used when as­sem­bling the quilt top later.

From Fab­ric A cut:

■ Four (4) 7in x WOF strips. Sub­cut into twenty (20) 7in squares.

■ Nine (9) 6½in x WOF strips. Sub­cut into four (4) 6½in x 21½in pieces [A], eight (8)

6½in x 18½in pieces [B], eight (8) 6½in x

12½in pieces [C], two (2) 4in squares. ■ Fif­teen (15) 3½in x WOF strips. Set aside eight (8) 3½in x WOF strips. Sub­cut the re­main­ing into four (4) 3½in x 21½in pieces [D], two (2) 3½in x 12½in pieces [E], twelve (12) 3½in x 6½in pieces [F] and eight (8) 3½in squares.

From Fab­ric B cut:

■ Three (3) 7in x WOF strips. Sub­cut into four­teen (14) 7in squares.

■ One (1) 4in x WOF strip. Sub­cut into two

(2) 4in squares.

■ Four (4) 3½in x WOF strips. Sub­cut into four (4) 3½in x 6½in pieces and thirty two (32) 3½in squares.

From Fab­ric C cut:

■ Three (3) 7in x WOF strips. Sub­cut into four­teen (14) 7in squares.

four (4) 3½in x 6½in pieces and thirty six (36) 3½in squares.

From Fab­ric D cut:

■ Two (2) 7in x WOF strips. Sub­cut into eight (8) 7in squares.

5 From the bind­ing fab­ric cut:

■ Nine (9) 2½in x WOF strips.

BLOCK G

6 Pair one Fab­ric A and one Fab­ric B 4in square RST. Mark a di­ag­o­nal line from cor­ner to cor­ner on the wrong side of the lighter fab­ric. Sew a ¼in seam on both sides of the marked di­ag­o­nal line, then cut along the marked di­ag­o­nal to form two Fab­ric A/B HSTs. Press seams open (Fig 1). Trim each HST to 3½in square. Re­peat to make a to­tal of four (4) Fab­ric A/B 3½in HSTs Block G.

PRE­PAR­ING HST UNITS

7 Re­peat step 6 us­ing one Fab­ric A and one Fab­ric B 7in square. Trim the re­sult­ing HST units to 6½in square. Re­peat to make the fol­low­ing:

■ Twenty (20) Fab­ric A/B 6½in HSTs.

■ Twenty (20) Fab­ric A/C 6½in HSTs.

■ Eight (8) Fab­ric B/D 6½in HSTs. ■ Eight (8) Fab­ric C/D 6½in HSTs.

BLOCK H

8 Pair one Fab­ric A/B 6½in HST and one Fab­ric C 3½ in square, plac­ing the Fab­ric C square on top of the Fab­ric B tri­an­gle, RST. Mark a di­ag­o­nal line from cor­ner to cor­ner on the wrong side of the Fab­ric C square. Sew along the marked line and trim ¼in from the sewn line (Fig 2). Press seam open. Re­peat to make a to­tal of twenty 6½in Block H.

BLOCK I

9 Re­peat step 8 with one Fab­ric A/C

6½in HST and one Fab­ric B 3½in square, with the Fab­ric B square on top of the Fab­ric C tri­an­gle (Fig 3). Re­peat to make a to­tal of twenty 6½in Block I.

BLOCK J

10 Re­peat step 8 with one Fab­ric B/D 6½in HST and one Fab­ric C 3½in square, with the Fab­ric C square on top of the Fab­ric B tri­an­gle (Fig 4). Re­peat to make a to­tal of eight 6½in Block J.

11 Re­peat step 8 with one Fab­ric C/D 6½in HST and one Fab­ric B 3½in square, with the Fab­ric B square on top of the Fab­ric C tri­an­gle (Fig 5). Re­peat to make a to­tal of eight 6½in Block K. 12 Pair one Fab­ric A 3½in x 6½in piece with one Fab­ric C 3½in square RST. Mark a di­ag­o­nal line from the up­per left cor­ner to the lower right cor­ner on the wrong side of the Fab­ric C square. Sew along the marked line and trim ¼in from the sewn line (Fig 6). Press the seam open. Re­peat to make a to­tal of two 3½in x 6½in L1 Blocks.

13 Re­peat step 12, mark­ing a di­ag­o­nal line from the up­per right cor­ner to the lower left cor­ner on the wrong side of the Fab­ric C square (Fig 7). Re­peat to make two 3½in x 6½in L2 Blocks.

BLOCKS M1 AND M2

14 Re­peat step 12 with one Fab­ric B 3½in x 6½in pieces and one Fab­ric C 3½in square. Then re­peat with one Fab­ric A 3½in square RST on the op­po­site end of the rec­tan­gle (Fig 8). Re­peat to make two 3½in x 6½in M1 Blocks.
