PIECING THE CUSHION TOP

Place a print fabric 5½in x 2½in rectangle RST with the pink 5½in square, lining up

the edges. Sew together and press seams towards the print fabric. Repeat on the opposite edge with the second print fabric 5 in x 2 in rectangle.

6 in

Sew the two print fabric 9 in x 2 strips to the sides of the block.

7

Repeat steps 5–6 with the four black fabric strips, continuing to press seams away from the centre (Fig 1).

8

Take a pink HST and place RST with the cushion block, centring the triangle on the edge. Sew in place and press the seam away from the centre. Repeat with a second HST on the opposite edge. Trim the corners flush with the sides of the block (Fig 2).

9

Sew the remaining HSTs to the sides and trim to 15 in square, centring the block.

QUILTING THE CUSHION FRONT

10

Make a quilt sandwich by placing the lining fabric right side down, the batting on top, then place the cushion centrally and right side up. Baste the layers together using your preferred method.

11

Quilt as desired. This cushion features straight line quilting following the lines of the piecing, as well as an angular spiral design in the centre. Square up the cushion top, trimming any excess batting and lining fabric in line with the cushion top.

ADDING PIPING

12

Neatly sew the binding strips together end to end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open and trim away any dog ears. Press in half and place the piping cord inside, lining it right up against the fold. Pin securely in place.

13

Next, align the raw edges of the piping with the cushion front, making sure the folded edge is facing towards the centre. Pin or clip in place, beginning in the centre of one cushion side, and leaving a 6in tail (Fig A). Curve the piping at each corner, carefully clipping the fabric within the seam allowance to ease around the curve. Leave another 6in tail at the other end of the piping cord.

14

Carefully pull the piping cord away from the ends of the bias binding. Sew the two ends together using a diagonal seam, and trim away the excess fabric. Trim the piping cord to fit (Fig B) then pin it back in place. Neatly sew the piping to the cushion front – using a zipper foot will help you to sew close to the cord, giving your cushion a more professional finish.

MAKING THE CUSHION BACK

15 in

Take the backing fabric 15 in x 12 rectangle and press one long edge under by 1in. Unzip the zip and place right side up on your work surface. Place the backing fabric on top, also right side up, with the folded edge under the zip teeth. The zip will overhang at each end. Sew in place, using a zipper foot.

16

Close the zipper. Take the second backing fabric piece and place RST, matching the top edge of the fabric with the edge of the zip. Sew in place. Press the backing fabric away from the zip.

17

Move the zip pull into the centre of the cushion. Baste the ends of the zip, backstitching at each end. Snip the excess zip tape at each side and trim the cushion back to 15 in square.

FINISHING THE CUSHION

18

Unzip the zipper on the cushion back. Place the cushion front and back RST. Pin in place. Sew around the edges, using a zipper foot to sew close to the piping cord. Turn right side out and press to finish.

6

Subcut each strip set into two 5½in pieces to make four blocks (Fig A).

7

Arrange your strip blocks with the pink and print 5½in squares, referring to the Layout Diagram for placement. Sew together into three rows, pressing the seams in each row into alternate directions. Join the rows together to complete cushion front.

QUILTING AND FINISHING

8

Follow steps 10–18 of the previous cushion instructions to quilt, add piping, assemble the back and finish the cushion. Once complete, pop a cushion pad inside each cushion cover and enjoy!
