ASSEMBLING THE DESK TIDY

3

Place one piece of main fabric on top of your batting and fuse in place, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Add any desired quilting now.

4

Take the 3½in x 7in handle piece and fold in half lengthwise, RST. Stitch across one short edge and then down the long raw edge. Turn right side out. Fold the remaining short raw edges over to the inside and press. Topstitch along this short edge to close.

5

Pin the handle to the centre of your tidy. Attach each end of the handle in place by sewing a 1in box with an ‘X’ across the centre (Fig A).

6

Take one pocket piece and press under one long edge by ¼in. Press under again to enclose the raw edges and topstitch in place (Fig B). Repeat to add a hem to the second pocket piece.

7

Place one pocket at the end of the tidy. Align the raw edges at the sides and bottom and baste in place. Stitch vertical lines across the pocket to make three sections, backstitching at the hemmed edge to secure in place (Fig C). Repeat with the second hemmed pocket at the other end of the tidy.

8

Place the remaining 28in x 9in main fabric piece on top of the tidy, RST. Sew around the outer edges, leaving a 6in gap for turning along one long edge. Trim the corners and turn right side out.

9

Hand stitch the turning gap closed using a ladder stitch.
