Mix subtle hourglass blocks with stand-out prints for a nine-patch with a difference

CUTTING LIST

Fabric A:

Three (3) 5½in squares. Fabric B:

Three (3) 5½in squares. Fabric C:

Four (4) 4½in squares.

1 Make six Quarter-square Triangle units as follows, pairing the Fabrics A and B. Pair two squares right sides together. Draw a diagonal line on the reverse of one square. Sew ¼in from the line on both sides. Cut along the drawn line, press the units open. Pair two Half-square Triangles right sides together, making sure that alternate colours are facing. Draw a line perpendicu­lar to the seam on the reverse of one square. Sew ¼in from the line on both sides. Cut along the drawn line, press the units open and trim to size. Trim to 4½in square and discard one.

2 Sew the QST units and squares into three rows as shown. Then sew the rows together to make the block (Fig 1).
