NOTICE HOW THIS CLEVER DESIGN SPINS THE BLOCKS FOR AN ON-POINT PATTERN

PIECING BLOCK A

6

Sew one Fabric A 2 in strip to one Fabric D 2 in strip, lengthwise. Press seams towards the darker fabric. Repeat with four more sets of strips. Cut the strips into seventy two 2 in x 4 in strips (Fig 1).

7

Sew the pieced 2 in x 4 in strips into pairs with matching fabrics positioned diagonally, as you would a four-patch. Nest the seams to match the centre point, to complete one Block A (Fig 2). The block should measure 4 in square. Make a total of thirty six Block A.

PIECING BLOCK B

8

Repeat steps 6–7 to make a total of forty nine Block B, using seven strips each of Fabrics A and B (Fig 3).

PIECING BLOCK C

9

Lengthwise, sew eighteen Fabric A and Fabric B 2 in strips in pairs. Cut the strips into one hundred and forty four

4 in squares (Fig 4).

ASSEMBLING THE QUILT TOP

10

Following the Layout Diagram, sew the blocks and remaining Fabric A and C squares together in rows, paying careful attention to the direction of your blocks. Sew the rows together diagonally, so that the blocks are on point in the finished quilt top. Square up the edges, trimming ¼in outside the centre points of the blocks.

QUILTING AND FINISHING

11

Cut the backing fabric in half across the width. Remove the selvedges and sew the two pieces together using a ½in seam. Press the seam open.

12

Press the quilt top and backing well. Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then place the quilt top centrally and right side up. Baste the three layers together using your preferred basting method.

13

Quilt as desired. Kelli quilted hers using a free-motion design called Modern Twist. Square up the quilt, trimming all layers, ¼in outside the block points, to approx. 68in square.

14

Sew the eight binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open and trim the dog ears. Fold in half lengthways, wrong sides together, and press.

15

Sew the binding strip to the right side of the quilt, creating a neat mitre at each corner. Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place to finish.
