PIECING THE QUILT TOP

8

Place a Fabric A and Fabric B 10in square RST. On the reverse of one square, draw diagonal lines from corner to corner. Sew ¼in either side of each diagonal line, then cut across the two drawn lines as well as vertically and horizontally to yield eight HSTs (Fig 1). Square up each HST unit to measure 4½in square.

9

Repeat step 8 to make HST units as follows:

■ Thirty (30) Fabric A/B.

■ Forty one (41) Fabric A/C.

■ Sixty eight (68) Fabric A/D.

■ Thirty one (31) Fabric A/F.

■ Twenty six (26) Fabric A/G.

IT MAY LOOK COMPLEX BUT THIS IMPRESSIVE DESIGN IS MADE USING SIMPLE SQUARES AND HSTS

■ Twenty five (25) Fabric B/C.

■ Nineteen (19) Fabric B/F.

■ Sixteen (16) Fabric B/G.

■ Fifty seven (57) Fabric C/D.

■ Forty three (43) Fabric D/F.

■ Thirty six (36) Fabric D/G.

10

Assemble your HST units and the remaining Fabric A and E 4 in squares into twenty one rows of twenty one units, referring to the Layout Diagram for placement and positioning.

11

Sew the units into rows, then sew all of the rows together, matching seams, to complete the quilt top.

QUILTING AND FINISHING

12

Cut the backing fabric in half across the width. Remove the selvedges and sew the two pieces together using a in seam. Press the seam open.

13

Press the quilt top and backing well. Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then place the quilt top centrally and right side up. Baste the three layers together using your preferred basting method.

14

Quilt as desired. Art Gallery Fabrics quilted wavy lines across the quilt in a light coloured thread, playing with the Hawaiian theme of the fabrics. Trim off the excess batting and backing fabric and square up the quilt to 84 in square.

15

Sew the binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open. Fold in half lengthways, wrong sides together, and press firmly.

16

Sew the binding to the right side of the quilt, creating a neat mitre at each corner. Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place to finish. WWW.LOVEPATCHWORKANDQUILTING.COM
