INCREASE THE MEASUREMENTS AND YOU CAN SEW YOURSELF JUMBO STORAGE BASKETS TOO! PREPARING THE POCKETS
Take one of the mesh 7in x 2½in pieces and encase one of the long edges in elastic. Hold in place with binding clips and sew along the edge of the elastic with a 1/8in seam allowance. Repeat with the second mesh piece (Fig A).
Carefully fuse the heavy weight interfacing to the wrong side of all your cut pieces of main fabric, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
Place one of the mesh panels on top of a main fabric 7in x 3¼in piece, aligning the bottom edges. Hold in place with binding clips and sew in place along the three raw edges with a / in seam allowance (Fig B). Repeat the same process for the second pocket.
Take the remaining fused main fabric piece and use a removable fabric marker to mark 3in from all four corners on the long edges (Fig C). Place a mesh pocket on top, RST, so the bottom edge of the pocket is between with the marks you just made. Clip in place.
Repeat with the second pocket, lining the bottom edge up with the opposite marks (Fig D). Sew along the clipped edges using a ¼in seam allowance. 9
Mark a line ¼in from the edge on either side of the main panel, as shown in Fig E. Trim these ¼in segments away from the main panel (Fig F). Open out and gently press the pockets open (Fig G).
Fold the top right hand edge you trimmed in step 9 in towards the right hand edge of the top mesh panel. The vertical right hand edge should now line up with the horizontal top edge. Clip in place (Fig H).
Sew along the side edge using a ¼in seam allowance and clip the corner. Repeat for the three remaining corners to form a basket shape.
Apply the medium weight interfacing to your lining fabric, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Mark a 3in square in all four corners and trim away (Fig I). Clip and sew your lining into a basket shape, following the method outlined in steps 10–11, leaving the last corner unsewn by 2½in (Figs J and K).
Turn the lining right side out and place inside your main piece so they’re RST. Align the top edges and clip in place, before sewing around the edges with a ¼in seam allowance (Fig L).
14 Gently turn the basket right side out, through the open corner seam of your lining. Close the seam with a couple of hand stitches and give the basket a careful press. Complete the basket by topstitching along the top edge for a neat finish.
